Animals Can Now Warn Us of an Impending Disaster, Such as an Earthquake or Tsunami


This Life Saving Device Might Be Tested at Zoological Parks Soon


The article "Sheep Collar Texts Shepherds When Wolves Attack" was published recently. Could animals warn us of impending natural disasters too, using this concept?
Swiss biologists recently devised a sheep collar to alert shepherds of wolves, and other dangers to their sheep. This collar monitors heart rate changes in the sheep and sends a text message when the sheep are frightened, such as when a wolf is near. 

It seems to me that animals could also "text" if a natural disaster was imminent, such as an earthquake, tsunami, and/or tornado.
  • Animals seem to "know" when a natural disaster is imminent. Before an earthquake, animals become agitated or excited. Before a tsunami, animals will instinctively seek higher ground. Before a tornado, animals seem to know where to find shelter. Even zoo animals predicted a recent earthquake at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.
  • Heart Rate Monitors are well known now, especially for humans. There are also numerous studies on animals, especially horses. As shown in the sheep article below, animals can be equipped with heart rate collars or similar devices.
  • The heart rates of several animals can be monitored simultaneously, as shown in the "Technical note: a noninvasive procedure for measuring goat heart rates". If multiple animals are agitated at the same time, perhaps a natural disaster is imminent.
  • As shown in the sheep article and the article "Heartbeat monitoring alert via SMS", text messages can be sent based on elevated heartbeats.
From this information, it seems obvious to me that animals could also "text" if a natural disaster was imminent, such as an earthquake, tsunami, and/or tornado.
 
To test this theory, here is a suggested protocol:
 
1. Zoo animals in earthquake prone areas could be equipped with wireless heart rate monitors. Some animals are more earthquake sensitive than others are.
2. A central computer could receive the wireless signals from each of these animals simultaneously. If multiple animals in different locations in the zoo had elevated heartbeats, perhaps a natural disaster is imminent.
3. The computer could then issue an alert to appropriate people to investigate the situation further.
4. The computer could also compare local seismograph information and develop a probability of an earthquake occurring.
5. In any event, humans could be notified that the multiple animals are frightened of "something". This "something" could very well be a natural disaster, such as an earthquake, tsunami, and/or tornado.
6. Many lives could be saved with such a system, letting the animals "text" of an impending disaster. Perhaps government agencies and/or individual people could collaborate on the development of such a system. 

Of course many other variations of this concept could be tested, some of which are below.
  • Many free-range animals in the wild have implanted physiological monitors relaying body-state conditions to wildlife study groups. Many of these devices use telemetry.
  • Some farm animals have external or internal health monitors to aid the farmer.
  • Probably the best way to initiate experimentation would be to build on the excellent work of others. Some information resources are below that show which animals are better than others to predict events. Some examples of earthquake sensitive animals are cats, dogs, snakes, catfish, parrots, etc. Worldwide ingenuity could develop "emotion sensors" for earthquake sensitive creatures, maybe even including earthquake sensitive people.
  • Emotion sensors for humans sometimes measure perspiration rate to indicate emotional stress level. Some animals perspire and some do not. For those which do perspire, some areas of the body might be more indicative, e.g. palms of the hand in humans.

Some people have the ability to sense impending earthquakes, much as animals can. The advantage with people is that we can more easily investigate how and why this sensing phenomenon works. 

An "Earthquake Sensitive" is a person who seemingly has the ability to predict coming earthquakes. 

When an earthquake is imminent, these sensitive people have certain physical, emotional, and mental symptoms or sensations. Some of these alerting symptoms are ear ringing, being dizzy, unusual ear sounds, intense dreams, uneasiness or anxiety, headaches, unexplained aches or pains, and/or visions of the future. 

These earthquake predictors are picking up signals from the earth or elsewhere that we do not understand yet. Enough accurate predictions have occurred by earthquake-sensitive-people to raise the interest level in the scientific world. Some researchers are studying earthquake sensitive people to understand this effect in people and in animals. The advantage with working with people is that we can ask these people questions and receive answers, whereas we cannot do that as easily in animals or plants. 

This earthquake prediction ability is unwanted in some people, however. Hence, some of these earthquake sensitive people seek to minimize or eliminate this prediction ability. Ways to control these earthquake symptoms include biofeedback and possibly hypnosis. Yet, biofeedback and hypnosis is used in others areas to aid teaching or learning, e.g. sports or relaxation therapy. Therefore, it seems reasonable to me that if biofeedback and hypnosis are used to "unlearn" certain things, these techniques could be used to "learn" earthquake prediction. 

The prospective trainee would have to be a "sensitive" person as a prerequisite. Sensitive people are very aware of their surroundings, physical condition, thoughts, and feelings.
The setting for this training area would be in a location that has frequent earth tremors. This sensitive person would log their thoughts, dreams, feelings, sensations on a daily basis. 

Galvanic Skin Response Sensors could provide a quantitative measure of the earthquake sensing within a person. This log would then be compared against local seismographic data for a given time period. When a trainee makes an accurate prediction, this desired response would be positively reinforced. 

In advanced learning, computer assisted training could be used to streamline the learning process. 

Hypnotic suggestions could increase this effect, since hypnosis is often used with biofeedback training. Hypnosis is a well-known learning aid, used in many areas of education, e.g. changing habits.

Recently, we had a minor earthquake in our area. I was intrigued enough to study this subject. What I found was amazing. 

Amazing, in that, there are many precursors to an earthquake, mostly from the natural world. Typically, animals, including some people, behave strangely. Water levels change and wells become murky. There are ground noises. The sky looks different. The list goes on but it is evident that nature gives us an early warning if we just look and listen for it. 

Some people of the world have indeed begun to watch for these early warning signs. China and Japan are the leading countries in this "quake watching".

Wherever you live, if you are concerned about earthquakes, you can begin "quake watching". Undoubtedly, you can find others in your locality to join you in your effort. 

Here are some suggested steps to begin quake watching:
  1. Learn what others have done before in amateur or volunteer quake watching. Some resources are below. Internet searching will yield more information. Repeat their efforts and build on their work.
  2. Set up your own quake watching station, making your own equipment, as needed. Much of what quake watchers do, however, is just observe nature.
  3. Log your observations and compare it with seismographic activity. One site for local seismic activity is at LISS - Live Internet Seismic Server. You might even find a local school participating in the IRIS program, wherein educational institutions have their own seismic stations. By doing this, you can continuously improve your skill, much like an athlete reviewing their performance.
  4. When you are confident of your skills, register as a quake watcher at your local geological agency. Your efforts might very well help prepare for the next earthquake.
