What's the difference between Alternative Medical Devices and Quack Medical Devices? It depends on who you ask!
- Satisfied patients who have found relief in such devices will say the devices are Alternative/Complementary Therapy, that maybe even a doctor recommended. (Anecdotal Evidence)
- Purists who ignore Anecdotal Evidence and only accept Scientific Evidence will say the devices are Quackery.
Like it or not, Alternative/Complementary Medical (CAM) Devices are here to stay, despite being called Quackery, by some. This is shown by the huge, and growing, CAM market.
Okay, now that we have that out of the way, here's a list of Complementary/Alternative Medicine/Therapy/etc.
Now to the learning parts:
- First and most important - Some past/present CAM modalities are just not safe. Why not make them safe for patient use - via redesign, instructions, etc.?
- Healthcare professionals, e.g. doctors, could help patients find relief from symptoms when science does not provide relief - if they wanted to and were not bound by peer ethics.
Quiz - Is it more important to provide "relief in any way" to patients, especially those with chronic symptoms, e.g. pain, or only provide scientifically proven methods of relief?
Clue - Try taking a copper magnetic bracelet away from a patient finding relief from pain from this bracelet.
There you have it. Let's get to work!

Here's a few ideas on how Science and/or Technology could help "Reunite Families" separated by Immigration Policy.
First, as with anything, there might be legal/ethical issues, but maybe Volunteer Attorneys could guide those implementing solutions.
Some Possible Sci/Tech Solutions....
Use DNA to match. DNA testing could also show relatives (with addresses) here in the United States, that might help re-unite the little ones. (Relative Matching Tool)
Maybe Border Control Agents can remember which child goes with each adult. Perhaps hypnosis can help them remember.
Perhaps children could look at photos of the detained adults and identify the adult - and visa versa. Physiological signs (emotions) , body language, facial recognition, etc. of those looking at photos could indicate who belongs to whom, even if the child/adult cannot communicate, e.g. toddlers. This technique is now used for reviewing movies.
Emotion Monitoring could be also used for infants smelling clothing of adults. There should be an emotional reaction when the infant smells the parent's clothing via pheromone identification.
Feel free to share more solutions in comments below, especially Sci/Tech Solutions!

Typically, Medical Monitors only display the Patient's Vital Signs. - This new Medical Monitor indicates Emotional Stress and/or Pain, too.
This new monitor provides an External Indicator e.g. colored lights to show the Internal Distress/Pain Condition of a person, e.g. a Patient - and provides a means to assist a person, e.g. a Patient, to Reduce their Distress/Pain by Relaxation Means, e.g. Deep, Slow Breathing.
See this Video to see How It Works, Theory of Operation, Applications, etc. - Medical Monitor with an Emotional Stress And/or Pain Indicator - Explanation Video.

There are two versions of this concept – one uses Skin Conductance or Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) and the other uses Heart Rate Variability (HRV).
******************************
This Blog Post shows how the make the Skin Conductance Version (GSR). (My Working Model is not for sale – but you can make your own – and make it even better than I did!)
The HRV version is being worked on and will be revealed soon.
*********************
Here's the Big Picture of my Working Model:
See Parts List.
Here's How I Made it....
1. Make a Medical Monitor Simulator to illustrate the total concept of a “Medical Monitor with an Emotional Stress And/or Pain Indicators”. I just used a picture of a typical Medical Monitor with "Emotional Stress And/or Pain Indicators" glued onto the picture.
Of course, you could modify an actual existing Medical Monitor to add the "Emotional Stress And/or Pain Indicators", too.
2. Make a Patient Wrist Band that measures skin conductance or heart rate variability (HRV). For my GSR version, I made a wrist band with copper sensors glued on - instead of the finger sensors that came with the Grove GSR Sensor.
(On the HRV version, glue the Heart Pulse Sensor onto the wrist band instead of the GSR copper sensors.)
3. Make a Patient Bedside Console with “Emotional Stress And/or Pain Indicators” and also Biofeedback indicators to help patient relax. I just used a hacked up old TV Remote to illustrate the concept.
The upper horizontal string Green, Yellow, and Red Led's are the "Emotional Stress And/or Pain Indicators", same as on the Medical Monitor.
The Two Blue vertical Led's below them are the Patient Biofeedback Breathing Pacer Indicators.
4 Wire an Arduino Uno according to this Wiring Diagram, referring the Parts List.
5. Program the Arduino with this Sketch. (Copy and Paste into Arduino) - If you don't like the transition between Red, Yellow, and Green - try experimenting with with the sensorValue portion of the sketch that turns on and off the R, Y, G led's.
6. Replay this Video to see how to work the system and try it out.

The "heart" of this model are the sensors:

* For Heart Rate Variability, the PulseSensor - and HRV - Scroll down to this Video
More Videos/Pictures.
This concept was shown by me at a local Maker Faire, last year.
Here's some Emotion Wearables to build your work on, too.

My Bears are not for Sale, but You can Learn
how to Make Your Own Bear Below:
1. Find yourself a Stuffed Bear. I bought mine at Walmart - one Beige and One Gray Bear. Mine are about 14" x 10" x 4".
2. Make an Arduino circuit with a Blue LED wired into the Analog Pin 11. An On/Off Switch is wired in series with a 9 volt battery powering the Arduino. I used an Arduino Uno, but other boards would do I'm sure. I put all this in a Plastic Box I also got at Walmart.
2. Make an opening in the Back of the Bear about 3-1/2 inches long. The Arduino and Box goes inside the Opening you made. You might have to remove some of the stuffing to fit all this in. Buttons help hold the opening closed when you're all done. The ON/Off Switch sticks out the back.
Position the LED in the front of the Bear about where a Heart would be.
3. Program the Arduino with a "Breathing LED Sketch" of your liking. I used the NonBlockingBreathingLed 0.1 Sketch by Luca Soltoggio - 201512 May 2015" -
Thanks, Luca Soltoggio. If necessary, change code to fit the Analog Pin you chose. I used Analog Pin 11.
4. See if it works like my Video. Tinker with it until it does what you want. Feel free to improvise on what I did - and make it better or different. Have fun!
