Well, that has changed, since the "Democratization of Innovation" and "Hacking of Medicine and Healthcare". People from all over the world are inventing Medical Devices, with or without the help of "Professionals".
In addition, patients, like myself, are going to adapt/modify prescribed medical devices to "make them fit". An example is when I modified a prescribed orthotic because the doctor said he could do no more for me. In my case, it worked.
Many times, patients go away "empty handed" because current healthcare can't provide them relief, so the patients look elsewhere or "make their own devices" to help them cope. I think this is especially true for the "other 90%" of the world that has little or no affordable healthcare available.
Many of these Homemade Devices are Low-Cost, Simpler, and down-right make sense.
I plan to write a book summarizing the State of the Art of "How to Make Medical Devices", so you don't have to "reinvent the wheel", finding work on which you can build. Also in this book will be Networking Resources, so you can "hit the road, running". You can build on the work of others, or just do it on your own.
This book will also cover briefly the Legal Aspects of Making Your Own Medical or Health Devices, but it's up to you to assess the risk of doing so. Each country or locality has their own laws. Others are Making Devices, though, so why can't you? This book will show "what's been done before by others making their own devices" and will offer up ideas on "what else might be done".
This book would be of interest to those who like to Make or Do-It-Yourself, as well as Commercial Medical Device Manufacturers.
Here's my research so far....stay tuned for upcoming book on "How to Make Your Own Medical or Health Devices".
