+ You could make and sell the device described in the expired patent. Please note that just because something is patented or written, it might not work all that well or might not be safe in today's standards. Use your own judgment, or seek help, to stay safe and out of trouble.

+ You could "translate" the expired patent into easy-to-understand instructions for others to make the device. These instructions could use easy-to-find materials, like trees, plants, rocks, people, scrap materials, etc.

+ You could recruit the inventors or authors to help you, since they are experts in their field. Some of the inventors of older patents might be retired now and might be looking for something to do.

+ Existing manufacturers could use this information to make their already fine products even better, more efficient, or less expensive.

"Super Symptom Checker" - Do It Yourself Doctoring – Wish List

Most, if not all, of us diagnose and treat ourselves, as evidenced by the huge Over-The-Counter Drug market. Yet, how efficient are we at this process? I know I’m not. If I had better tools and knowledge, I think I could diagnose and treat my own health conditions better. In this economy, can we afford to be inefficient in this process?

Here’s my Wish-List. How about you? What would you like to see happen in self-diagnosis and treatment? Feel free to comment and/or add your wishes to this Wish-List.
1. A free computer-based one-stop Medical Advisor that would check more than just symptoms. I’d like to see Symptom Checkers have the capability for the user to input Vital Signs, Diagnostic Test Results, and Health History. Based on these inputs, the computer would give the user most probable Diagnoses. The user then picks a diagnosis. The computer would then give a personalized printed “prescription” for Over-The-Counter Medicines, Exercise, Diet, Treatments, etc. that might help the user’s condition. Think of this as a “Super Symptom Checker”. Examples of existing Symptom Checkers are WebMD, Medical Symptoms Database , Online Medical Symptom Checker , MSO Online Medical Symptom Checker , or Diagnosaurus, etc.

2. More home health tests and tools available openly on pharmacy shelves. Examples – Home General Health Diagnostic Tests (e.g. Blood/Urine Panel Tests), Stethoscopes, etc. - plus how to use instructions.

3. Self-Service Health Kiosks in pharmacies that would include a computer-based Medical Advisor, basic medical testing capabilities, and where the user could provide health history on a removable memory card.

4. Health care professionals make free pre-recorded training sessions on how to diagnose and treat ourselves for common sicknesses.

If you're wondering how this might work - think of your local DIY home-improvement or automotive-repair stores....
* These stores have many items on the shelf and even more available by online ordering.
* All the items have good how-to-use instructions.
* There are helpful knowledgeable employees onsite. Many of the employees are retired people who did that kind of work before they retired.
* There are frequent "How-To" seminars.

"Do It Yourself Doctoring" might be particularly helpful in the situations below:
* For those who just can't afford medical help, e.g. without insurance, particularly in this economy. Similarly, for whatever reason, for those who want to minimize health expenses.* For those where there is no doctor nearby, e.g. developing countries, rural areas, etc.
* For those who want to have more a part of their healthcare, working alongside with their Doctor on their own. Checking up on their doctor. Second opinion. Etc.
* For those who want to help the doctor of sick loved one.
* For those who just plain want to do it themselves, especially efficiently.
* For those whose doctor has given up on them and have no more answers.

Wow, it's been nearly 5 years since I first posted this "Super Symptom Checker".  Here's a few more additions for 2013....

• Since emotions affect physical symptoms, I'd also like to add Emotional Stress and Pain as Vital Signs.  Here's an idea for a Medical Monitor that considers Emotional Stress and/or Pain.
• I'd also like to see "Lay Health Workers" available to guide a person in using the Super Symptom Checker, providing health information, helping the user find support resources, etc.  These Lay Health Workers could be onsite or the user could connect via Internet (Tele-medicine)
• As long as I'm asking - I'd like to see Lay Health Workers be trained in finding consumer health information.  Many times people just have questions on their health care - and end up going to the doctor, urgent care, emergency room, etc. - or worse yet, go without care.  I think people want to know what they're taking and why now.  Here's a start - Librarians with Borders.
• Oops, one more - I'd like to see Symptom Checkers access the knowledge base of Hesperian Health Guides - giving easy-to-understand health information in various languages worldwide.
• Of course, health professionals are available as needed or wanted, if available and affordable, either in person or via tele-medicine.

Interfacing with the Doctor Within

FYI - TG Ideas LLC has recently launched a new blog "Interfacing with the Doctor Within" - http://doctor-within.blogspot.com/. I still plan to continue on this "Ideas for Products or Inventions" blog also. I think both have merit....and will keep me busy in retirement starting next year!

This "Interfacing with the Doctor Within" concept was first introduced on this "Ideas for Products or Inventions" blog several months ago, under the titles of Low-Cost Medical Diagnostic and Treatment - Parts 1 and 2. I think this concept has so much potential I made a new blog just on this topic alone. If interested, please visit and comment. I look forward to hearing from you.

There seems to be a "Doctor Within" that takes care of most of the body functions, with or without our help or the help of a medical professional. Sometimes, however, the "Doctor Within" might need help from the outside to complete the body repairs. Currently we only "look in" to fix the health problem by our medical tests, etc. We don't “ask” the "Doctor Within" what it needs to fix itself. This new blog lays the foundation for better accessing and investigating the "Doctor Within", perhaps by electronic means.

TG Ideas LLC has created this blog to promote the use of science to record and explore the “intuitive messages” the body, mind, and spirit are trying to tell us about our health and health of others. Up to now, we could only say or write these "intuitive messages". Throughout the world, there is much research being done on "Brain Computer Interfaces" that show brain or mind activity. On the other hand, very little research is being done on to automatically recording "intuitive messages". By doing so, we could scientifically study and improve on this process, and maybe someday, have a device to "Interface with the Doctor Within". This concept might just be a solution to high health care costs.

So what can you do with all this information? Here's some suggestions.
+ You could make and sell the device described in the expired patent. Please note that just because something is patented or written, it might not work all that well or might not be safe in today's standards. Use your own judgment, or seek help, to stay safe and out of trouble.
+ You could "translate" the expired patent into easy-to-understand instructions for others to make the device. These instructions could use easy-to-find materials, like trees, plants, rocks, people, scrap materials, etc.
+ You could recruit the inventors or authors to help you, since they are experts in their field. Some of the inventors of older patents might be retired now and might be looking for something to do.
+ Existing manufacturers of Bicycle-Powered Devices could use this information to make their already fine products even better, more efficient, or less expensive.
+ Build on the work of others. Maybe, use patent images instead of starting with a blank sheet of paper. Computer model other's designs and make the designs better or cheaper or simpler. You don't have to "reinvent the wheel" . Design around active patents.
+ You could use the information to brainstorm new ideas.

Hello All – This posting continues in designing Low-Cost Medical Diagnostic/Treatment, expanding on interfacing with the "Doctor Within". The goal in all this is to use science to record and explore the “messages” the body, mind, and spirit are trying to tell us about our health and health of others.

Repeating portions of the previous posting on designing "Low-Cost Medical Diagnostic/Treatment Devices – Part 1"….There seems to be a "Doctor Within" that takes care of most of the body functions, with or without our help or the help of a medical professional. However, sometimes the "Doctor Within" seems to need help from the outside to complete the body repairs. It seems that currently we only "look in" to fix the health problem by our medical tests, etc. We don't seem to “ask” the "Doctor Within" what it needs to fix itself. I'd like to lay the foundation for better accessing the "Doctor Within", perhaps by electronic means.

Maybe intuition is a way to access the "Doctor Within". Other names for intuition are – hunch, gut feel, sixth sense, gut instinct, gut knowing, innate wisdom, gut reaction, etc. Nothing new here, Medical Intuition has been around for some time.

This posting proposes some ways to detect and record intuition, plus some information on possible “how-to” techniques.

Medical Dowsing or Radiesthesia – Possible How-To Information

Dowsing has been described as an indicator of intuition or unknown knowledge. As you will see below, computer-assisted dowsing is not new. I suggest starting with what has been done already with medical dowsing or Radiesthesia. Then, interface this dowsing with a computer.

A computer or PDA could record dowsing answers very nicely without interrupting the dowsing train of thought. Looking ahead, I can see where computers can help explore these ideomotor effects by recording, analyzing, interpreting, and communicating these effects. Computers can also help form questions and provide known information to the user. It seems like all the traditional uses of dowsing could be duplicated and maybe enhanced by computer-assisted dowsing.

* DE19517828 - Deflection measuring device for divining rod. This patent application shows how to interface a divining (dowsing) rod to a computer (computer-assisted dowsing.

* A Simple, Low-Cost, Data-Logging Pendulum Built from a Computer Mouse

* Camera Mouse to record any dowsing tool response.

* Hand worn remote computer mouse - US Pat. 5489922 -– could be part of a dowsing tool.

* Once dowsing tool responses are inputted to computer, Mouse Gesture software could interpret the tool response into answers.

* A Pie Menu might be viewed as a pendulum-dowsing chart. A Mouse Pad or Computer Screen could be in the form of a Dowsing Chart or an anatomy diagram, Aura diagram, or Chakra diagram. WebMD or other Internet resources could also be dowsed for diagnosis/treatment.

* Tactile-acoustic information detecting and measuring apparatus and methodUS Pat. 5744715 - measuring "stick" as used in Radionics. Furthermore, a computer touch pad might be used instead of a Radionic Stick Plate.

* System and method for speech generation from brain activityUS Pat. 7275035 – Ideomotor responses might initiate speech.

Polygraph (Lie Detector) Devices to record intuition – Possible How-To Information

* EP1651942 - ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL INTUITION INDICATOR…uses body measurements to infer intuition….

* Build on the work of Cleve Backster and his theory of Plant Perception. Maybe plants could be a remote intuition indicator in themselves and the results could then be inputted into a computer. Don’t forget about animals having a “sixth sense”, knowing when someone is sick.

* Gut Feelings, Intuition, and Emotions: An Exploratory Study - Dean I. Radin, Marilyn J. Schlitz. The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. February 1, 2005, 11(1): 85-91. doi:10.1089/acm.2005.11.85. – uses electrogastrogram to investigate gut feelings.

* The intuitive responses of Medical Intuitives, Doctors, Veterinarians, Patients, etc. could be recorded and studied to enhance medical diagnosis.

* Perhaps there could be computer based training to help people increase their own innate intuition. Computer-assisted dowsing could be viewed as “training wheels” to using intuition efficiently.
