Pet Activated Emergency Alert

How to Make Your Own Pet-Activated Emergency Alert - Dog-Telephone Interface Can Save Your Life

You can have your own intelligent security system that works for just food, water, and attention. Some dogs can respond to emergencies, through training. These emergencies could be fire, flood, break-ins, medical situations, etc.

Pets, particularly dogs, can "call" for help in an emergency. All they need is training and a dog-telephone interface.

You can make your own alert device and train your pet to be a home security system.

The general guidelines below show how to make a dog-telephone interface. Expand on these guidelines to make your own device and train your pet how to use it.

1. First, check with agencies that train assistance or service dogs to see what they use. Learn about what has been done before, using the links below.
2. For the device itself, make a box with three large push buttons or touch-plates on top. The buttons could be different shapes or colors. Dogs are not color blind, but they cannot see colors as brilliantly as humans can.
3. One button is for fire, another for police, and another for health care emergency. You could also just have one button for 911.
4. The box would sit on the floor within easy reach of a service dog. When pressed, each of the buttons could call for appropriate help.
5. Buy a store-bought Auto-Dialer, and then connect the button box to the Auto-Dialer. Program the Auto-Dialer with your own emergency numbers.
6. When activated, the Auto-Dialer calls for help. For example, if the fire button was pressed, the box would call the fire department and the box would say something like "There is a fire at 123 Main Street. Please send help. This is an automatic recording. Please listen to my barking to show there really is an emergency here."
7. For assistance with the electronics, ask an open source electronic community, such as Arduino. Other resources for free or low-cost information are local technical schools, universities, etc.
8. After you make the button box, ask for help from an organization that trains service dogs. Ask them what they thought and maybe test it. Find out how they train dogs to call for help.
9. Use it yourself, tell others if you want, or maybe make millions on the invention you just made.

Takeaways -
  • It is possible for animals, especially dogs, to call for help in emergency.
  • You or others could make a device to allow a dog to call for help.
  • Whatever it is you want to make, someone can help you make it, often at no charge.
